I was taking a picture of Sara at dinner and got Eric in the background, I couldn't help but zoom in and crop this hilarious picture. After a long day of fun in the sun, cocktails and a delicious dinner, we headed over to the OTT for several cocktails.

Now this married guy lectured me all night about calling The Lurker... well The Lurker and my shameful, sinful ways, then drunkenly hit on Jill. Boo married guy, boo.

Just need to vent for a sec... I came in at 7 this morning to get everything I need done before I leave for a week. It is 10:30 and the people I work with aren't here yet, I can't get much done today without them. Who isn't at work yet by 10:30? How hard is it to get up before noon?

Long Weekend- Part One

Jill and I dog sat for Suzie this weekend, and in between hanging with the dogs and chowing down on hot dogs (the Atlanta Slaw Dog: Chile con Carne, Cheese, Cole Slaw... I want one for breakfast everyday) we managed to head south to kick it with our friend Sara at Fritz's pool. Fritz is a great host, and kept our cocktails and bellies full. He also let me laze about in this raft for hours. Seriously I don't think I got out all day. I got a strange sunburn where I missed the sunscreen, it turned into an itchy pit. Mostly just soaked up some (lots) sun.

I want to tell you guys all about the weekend, but I have too much work to do before I head to NYC (2 days!). Maybe I'll get to it tonight after I do all of my laundry and pack. Or maybe not. I will try to update you guys from the road, but I just may have too much fun to remember that.

Rally

I don't know how she did it, but Sameera got Jill and I off the couch at almost midnight to rally and hit up a new bar. I think we look pretty good considering we had just taken a 4-hour nap. This blonde boy just might be the neediest boy I have ever met. He had known Jill for all of three minuted when he started whining about not getting enough attention from her. Seriously, how cute are we?

I will definitely be back to this bar (even though I can't remember it's name), probably earlier. The patio had these great big couches that were great for lounging and I think would be even greater for lounging in the sunshine. I don't remember this meathead's name but he was cracking me up with his prom poses. He was nice enough, but pouted all night when he found out Sameera was married.

The Reason I Didn't Make it to Yoga on Saturday

Reprimanded Once Again

Once again Jill has told me off for planing on having a mellow weekend, so I am going to compromise. I really really really really really need to study for the LSAT a ton this weekend, I have been too busy this weekend to really get anything done besides work. I want to go to several yoga classes, I want to take all the dogs on a nice walk, I want to go on a bike ride, I want to eat either ethiopian or indian food, I want to go to happy hour on Friday and get 75c oysters, and I want to meet some boys who find Jill or me so charming that they invite us to a Memorial day cookout and make us food. OK, that's quite the laundry list of things to do for a mellow weekend, but when I agreed to dog-sit my plans to hide out in Golden went right out the window and I decided to settle for just not going out. But now that I have been harangued into going out too, I'll just have to settle for not getting too drunk, wasting all of my money, and the spending all of the daylight hours on Suzie's couch watching HBO.

It's a compromise.

P.S. If anyone wants to join me for any of the aforementioned activities give me a call.

Mellow Weekend

I am having a mellow weekend. I am not going out all crazy and spending a ton of money. I am long overdue for a haircut and I am spending money on that instead. I am also getting a wax next week. I am terrified. I have been doing my brows myself for ten years, and that doesn't hurt, but I'm a little worried about my bikini area. Ouch.
The other thing I spent a small part of my long awaited tax return on is this guy. I am excited to have something else to listen to at work besides the guy who sits two feet away from me and talks to himself all day. I bought a couple of songs, and then spent most of the night copying cd's I haven't listened to in ages. Yay.

Plus I have actually been making the most of my summer, going climbing or to yoga in the evenings, and I am usually too tired when I get home to get down to business, but I will soon, I promise. Little Pieces

Do you guys watch Greys? I still do, and I read Grey Matters each week as well. This week Shonda Rhimes wrote the writer's blog about the season finale. Don't worry I'm not about to spoil it for you, she wrote this line about the Christina story arc this season... "Slowly, over the course of the season, we've watched as hard-nosed Yang sliced off little pieces of herself to accommodate Burke."

I read this line several times before I was able to move on to the rest of the piece. This is something we all do, or we all have done, and to see "it," the idea or whatever it is right there in words kind of struck me. I don't know if the men I have known also sacrificed little pieces of themselves to accommodate me, but something makes me think not. And I'm not alone in this. My girlfriends do it, apparently the Grey's writers and their girlfriends do it, every one's girlfriends do it.

After the demise of each relationship I gather those pieces up, and in time bounce back to my whole self, but I think I'd like to find someone for whom I don't have to slice off those little pieces, someone who likes or at least tolerates all of my pieces, me in my entirety. But maybe it isn't about what someone else likes or tolerates at all.

It's a blurry line, between compromise and sacrifice. Something I have been working on mastering for years, and I'm not there yet. I'm not close yet. But I'm still trying.

Happy Mother's Day!

I took my mom to lunch today at NoRTH in Cherry Creek, the food was pretty good, but oh my stars the service was bad. I don't know what we did to our server, and maybe she was just hungover, but it sure felt like contempt. NoRTH is a good restaurant, maybe a little too big for it's britches if you ask me. If you ask them;

Taking its cue from an Italian trattoria, NoRTH offers a contemporary approach to Modern Italian Cuisine. With sleek interiors, a sexy atmosphere, and a menu offering unique antipasti, wood fired pizzas, inventive pasta dishes and many wood roasted and grilled dishes North is the perfect spot for any dining occasion.

When it first opened it was hot, but now the service isn't great, their menu hasn't changed since I was last there (in early 2006? 2005?), and the "sexy atmosphere" needs a good cleaning. But, the walls opened up and it reminded my mom of the last time we ate in Little Italy where the restaurant opened up to the street. The day was beautiful, I had a lovely riesling which started out too acidic, but opened up beautifully when it warmed to room temperature. Mom had the short-rib "osso buco"which I've had before, tough stuff to mess up, tasty. I had an "italian-style" benedict with prosciutto, asparagus and sun-dried tomato hollandaise. It was fine, perfunctory benedict, but can I just say what is up with the sun-dried tomatoes everywhere. It's like 1994 came to Denver and never left. There's a whole world of flavors out there, lets try something else once in a while, OK?

Slow Down There, Ladies

I don't quite know what led to the extreme level of inebriation that possessed Jill, Kate and myself, but it led to what appears to have been quite a wild night, but we can't really remember. If it's Summer, I Must be Grilling

Last night it was brats, mushrooms, asparagus, and fennel. I needed to get those veggies cooking before they went off, and they were tasty. Especially the fennel. It grilled up crispy and sweet, I grill all veggies the same way, olive oil, coarse salt and cracked pepped. Grilling concentrates the flavors and sugars in the veggies, so I don't like seasonings to interfere.

If you are looking for a great grilling book, I cannot recommend Taming the Flame by Elizabeth Karmel highly enough. it has great recipes for everything from chicken to beef to lamb to seafood to grilled pizza tasty side dishes and desserts.

I think its time to break out the old summer standard, white wine spritzers and make to most of this beautiful weather.

I spent Saturday night with my friend Sameera and her husband Saquib, who might be the two most beautiful people I have ever met, not to mention a blast to hangout with.
We spent most of the evening at Alto, the new restaurant in the old Sambuca space. It wasn't crowded, but it was a great spot. I will definitely come back. An old friend, Anna, from when Sameera and I worked at The Cheesecake Factory met us out. It was great to see her, it has been a long time.

Grillin'

As much as I love sitting out on a patio in the summer drinking beer, I love sitting on my patio and grilling or reading a book just as much. Last night was perfect. Murph and I went to Golden City for a beer and some sun, then came home to grill up some dinner. I made these gorgeous salt-crusted shrimp.

I made enough to have some leftovers, and tonight I am going to grill up some mushrooms and have garlicky shrimp and grits.

I also started this recipe for Crema de Limncello last night by removing the peel from 10 lemons and setting them to steep in a bottle of Everclear for one week. Does anyone know what I can do with ten peeled lemons?

Champagne

Instead of doing anything productive on Saturday, Jill and I hung out a Suzie's place and nursed our hangovers all day. We eschewed the Cinco de Mayo festivities and opted instead to lay on the couches and drink champagne all day.

I went to Lime with Suzie and Mike
for dinner. I have never liked margaritas, but I keep trying them in the hopes that one day they'll grow on me. I had some pomegranate margaritas that I am sure are only the first of many I will enjoy this summer.

After dinner Suzie and Mike went to a party, and I went to Corridor 44 to have a few drinks while I waited for Sameera and her husband. I have always kind of liked being out by myself, because I always meet new people, and I just don't feel uncomfortable dining or going to a movie or even having a few cocktails alone.

Finally, this cocktail, champagne with a splash of Guinness, delicious. Who'd have thought.

The Lurker

So you see this guy in the blue shirt, lurking somewhere in each of these pictures? Well folks, meet the Lurker. An initially creepy dude who turned out to be actually quite charming. We showed up at Rock Bar about 11:30 or midnight, and shortly after, this guy started hanging around. (Before you ask I have no idea what Jill and I are doing in this picture.)

He just kept hanging around for a couple of hours.
Brought me a beer, and finally (I guess) worked up the nerve to say hello.

He finally wore me down (or I had enough to drink) and we started hanging out. I ended up hanging out with him on Saturday night too. He is a nice guy, pretty normal (if a little creepy) but he makes a noise. This is becoming a recurring pattern. Last week's red haired guy made an underlying mmmmmmm humming sound almost constantly, and always while I was talking. This guy kept whispering oy-oy-oy regularly. Like forty times. I swear I can't meet a normal guy to save my life. Maybe I don't want to.

The Demise of the Lean Cuisine Diet

The Lean Cuisine diet did not do me wrong. For about a month, I ate Lean Cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It was convenient (I was too busy to cook) kept my calories low, and some are even really tasty, I highly recommend hunan beef and meatloaf with whipped potatoes. I lost a considerable amount of weight, well I don't know about weight, but certainly inches. I haven't weighed myself in ages, but clothes I couldn't squeeze into a month ago fit well now. However, i feel I have hit a plateau, and now that I am working out so much, I feel like I need a lot more protein. I don't really find it difficult to eat healthy because I love grilling, and I love vegetables, although I have a tough time not eating tons of butter, but I'll work on that.

Last night on the way home from yoga, I stopped to pick up some groceries. I love to cook, and I hadn't in at least a month. Working out makes me ravenously hungry, and I was in the mood for something spicy, so I decided on a stir fry. My favorite dish when I get Thai takeout is Sriracha beef. One day I wanted to try it at home, so I came up with this slightly bastardized, but no less delicious recipe.

Slice lots of onions and tons of garlic (I can't get enough garlic) and get them cooking in a big pan with a little oil.

When the onions and garlic are soft-ish throw in the sliced up chicken (I like to slice it when it is a little bit frozen, it just makes it easier, but I have great knives), about 2 Tbsp. low sodium soy sauce and as much Sriracha Thai hot chili sauce as you think tastes good.

Cook it up, and I like to eat it over steamed broccoli, but could serve it over rice if you like it like that. This is the easiest recipe, and it tastes just like the real thing.

In other big news, I am heading in to quit my job today! I am not going to lie, I'm pretty excited. No more steel toed-boots, no more getting whistled as I walk from one building to another, no more smug-for-no-reason ex-boyfriend. I think it's going to be a good summer.

Steuben's / Uptown Tavern

Friday night we had a rare girl's night out. We convened for a late dinner, and decided to go to Steuben's. I had never been before, and I was looking forward to checking it out. On their website, they have this to say about themselves:

Steuben's is named after a restaurant in Boston that my Great Uncles, Max and Joe opened in 1945. Steubens became a famous Boston restaurant, nightclub, and hotspot from the 1940's to the 1960's on Boylston Street. The Vienna Room, The Cave, and The Blue Room were all part of the Steubens space and hosted Big Bands, Jazz Bands, Swing Bands, The Rat Pack, Proms and Sweet Sixteens. In its prime, Steuben's was the center of the Boston dining and nightlife scene.
Steubens, Denver, is a restaurant that respects the history of its name and the core ingredients of the American Regional classics we have attempted to recreate. These dishes are America's cuisine and American's interpretations of the dishes of our diverse cultural heritage. We have enjoyed the endless debates, opinions, stories, research, consultations and food memories that have led us to the opening version of the Steuben's menu.

I think they are spot on with their vision. It is a great space, that is going to be even better in the summer when the garage door-style windows open up to the street. The patrons were all very young, and hip, and I love the comfort food revival. The cocktails were a little pricey, but the entrees are big enough to share. Jill and I split a monte cristo which was great, crispy and melty, but not greasy. Suz and Sara split an iceberg wedge salad, and order of mac and cheese, and a great looking pan roasted chicken. I am sure we will be back, and hopefully for brunch, because their brunch menu looks great.

After dinner we popped across the street to Uptown Tavern to have some drinks. I don't usually love uptown, but the ladies like it. This particular night however, I had a nice time. Not a great time, and I wasn't compelled to stay all night, but it was a good place to get warmed up.

Maybe the Perfect Thursday

It started early, I went climbing on North Table with my friend Andy a little before 8. Murph came up and after a nice hike, we did three routes before heading back down around noon so Andy could make his lunch meeting. When I got back into the office I had a message from my advisor. He had an urgent message for me which turned out to be an interesting job offer. Yep, that means I can say goodbye to Hazen this summer.
In the afternoon my mom and I went golfing. It took forever to play 18 holes, there was a bit of a bottleneck, and we had to do a lot of waiting, but we enjoyed a truly beautiful afternoon.

Food on the Brain

Second only to seeing my dear bud Heather, the thing I am most excited about doing in New York is eating. A lot. I love the food on the east coast, and not just in New York, in Maryland, in Jersey, any where where the altitude is ea-level-ish the bread seems to taste better, the ingredients are more authentic and of better quality, and the variety is wonderful. Unless you want Mexican, but I can live without it for a week. One thing I have been dreaming about, and my mouth is watering just typing this right now, is lunch at Oyster Bar. I know it is kind of tourist-y, but I'm a tourist, so bite me I can eat wherever I want to. One place I will definitely not be dropping some hard earned cash is Suba, a trendy tapas type place, and if you want to know why, head on over to Daily Dish and read all about it. Even if you don't want to know why you should read it anyway because it cracked me up. I'm all for pretentious arty food, as long as it tastes good. If it makes you gag, what's the point?
