Putting my Thursday in Perspective

Happy Thursday. I wish there was one more day before tomorrow because I have a ton of stuff to do before 3 pm tomorrow afternoon. Because I am finally getting my ass up the mountain to go visit Mak and Kate (and about 12 other people from college, were going camping, I was only invited because this guy I dated in college and his wife who hates me can't make it).

So, today was good. Pretty Good. Well, at least my workout was good. And tonight Brian and Pam, a couple I met while out with Jill for one of her coworkers' birthdays, have invited me to the sneak preview of the Transformers movie because they had an extra ticket. So yay!

Public service announcement: If you have to polish a sample of aluminum dross for XRD and optical microscopic analysis, don't wet polish it because it will dissolve, and with it a half a days worth of work needlessly stressing you out right before your weekend.

I also wanted to tell you guys that I added a new link to the right over there. Going on 27 is this guy's blog about being in the Peace Corp in Cameroon, it's pretty new, but interesting to read. Granted he makes me feel a little shallow, but I can deal with that in exchange for a good read.

Top Chef

I am addicted to Bravo's reality shows. Right now, it's Top Chef, which is one of my favorites, every week I am both amazed at the chefs' creativity, and inspired to create something new of my own. This week the chef's were challenged to reinvent classic comfort food with a healthy, lower cholesterol face lift, and they all just butchered the challenge. They could have really had fun with this, and considering the comfort food renaissance that is happening right now, they should have had no problem. Their recipes were uninspired, uninventive and way too literal.

One girl had to reinvent Franks and Beans, she did a store bought chicken sausage and lentils. Boring, but I got to thinking...

My favorite thing about Franks and Beans is that sweet sauce that binds everything together, and those soft, mushy beans.

I like the idea of chicken sausage, and let's not kid ourselves, there's no way I'm making my own, store bought sounds good to me, and I've got a bit of a hard on for cannelloni beans right now, tiny white beans with just the right texture for a recipe like this. But that sauce... I'm still thinking, definitely some figs or fig jam to add sweetness, but to balance it out, maybe braising the sausages in white wine and dijon? Maybe throwing in some kale or mustard greens for a little bit of bitterness? Mushrooms? Garlic? A tart granny smith apple grated on top? Some peppery arugula? I'll have to think about it a little more, I'm excited to try it, I'll let you know how it goes.

Atlanta Slaw Dog

Oh yeah baby, that's what I'm talking about. That would be a grilled 97% fat free Hebrew National dog topped with raw bermuda onion, cheddar cheese, chile con carne, and cole slaw. A side of grilled sweet potato chips, and I know you're jealous.

To make up for my lunchtime excess, I kept it healthy for dinner, but still tasty.

My Kind of Monday Night

Last night I went to a great yoga class, and I was going to go climbing afterward, but my arms were worked, so that didn't happen.

I stopped at the grocer and picked up some great fresh produce. I love shopping right after yoga, because even though I am super hungry, all I want is super healthy food.

For dinner I made my favorite whole wheat pasta with minced red onion (raw), diced tomato, avocado and grilled zucchini, finished with a little olive oil and lemon juice and lots of cracked pepper. It tastes better than it looks, so no pictures.

Since I had the grill all fired up for the zucchini, I threw some fruit on as well.

Although the bananas looked great, they just weren't ripe enough to taste good, maybe in a couple of days. It was a good thing I threw a Pluot on as well, with just a tiny glaze of oil and a sprinkle of vanilla sugar, grilled stone fruits are some of my favorites on the grill.

No More Fun

I'm not doing anything fun again until July. I have no money, I have been slacking on my workouts, I have too much work to do, and now I'm sick. Bummer, but this week I just want to chill out on the couch with the menagerie and watch the Rockies.

Gina!

So, I'm going to have to work this weekend. Bummer, I know, but the reason I need to work this weekend is because Gina is in town, and we got absolutely wrecked last night. I stopped at work this morning to pick up some things I could work on at home, headed home and parked it on my couch. Poor Jill has to work all day. I don't know what we were thinking.

Last night we met for happy hour at Jax and had some oysters and some cocktails. Despite our best efforts, we weren't able to talk Gina into eating somewhere on Pearl street and we headed north to Ratta Trattoria. Boy am I glad she was so insistent! Probably the best Italian meal I've had in Colorado ever.

After dinner we went and played some pool, then dancing.

Today I am so hurt, I had a coca-cola, a couple of darvacet, and ordered a pizza. So yeah, working tomorrow.

Waylaid or way-laid

So, back in this postI wrote that Jill and I were on our way to a bar when we got waylaid after running into some old friends and never made it. Jill was showing her parents some pictures this weekend, and when she showed her dad this one, he mentioned that he had seen it already, "the one where we got waylaid"... Jill had never heard this phrase before, and thought her dad was saying she got way-laid. Like really, really laid. I laughed so hard I nearly split my pants.

Uh-Oh

Despite my best efforts I'm a little sweet on Drew. I mean The Lurker. Not good to name the puppy. Funny thing about The Lurker, his friends call him that too. Blue shirt friend called him that when we were sitting on the stoop, and Jill and I cracked up and revealed that we too call him The Lurker. Because apparently he lurks. A lot. He was a little miffed, but admitted to the lurking. It was kind of hilarious.

Garage

First off, I should mention that these pictures were taken about 9 pm, and we were more than a little drunk. And you can tell by looking at us. We were planning to go to the Rockies game, and never made it because they were sold out of Rock Pile tickets. Instead we ended up at Drew's house drinking beer on his stoop, and then went out to a bar called the Garage, it was fun. There was this game where in the middle of the bar there was a ring hanging from a string on the ceiling, and the point was to swing it and catch it on a hook on the opposite wall. Jill was good at it. I was not.

Boulder- Friday Night

I'm not sure what all my ladies got up to this weekend, I missed our gals Suzie and Sara, but Jill and I persevered alone. We headed out in Boulder, but alas we didn't take a single picture! But we did have a good time. I'll spare you the details. I have some fun pictures from Saturday night that I'll put up later.

A couple things:

July 11, the new HP movie is coming out, and then on the 21st the book. Yay!
Gina is coming to town this weekend, so I may have to postpone camping with my dad.
Everyone wish Frannie luck getting out of the Air Force so he can make it to his first day of the Air National Guard.
I'm not going to see the Yankees in Denver, the pinche Rockies jacked the prices for those three games. Bullshit.

Napping

I'm a little worried about what Murph has been getting into so I decided to work from home today (research) so I could keep an eye on him. I didn't see him get into anything unusual, but I caught this great pic of him napping. He must have been dreaming about something because his tongue was sticking out and he was sort of running in place.

With the exception of the crazy red eyes (the camera's fault, not Suzie's) I am completely in love with this picture! I do have to admit that I made her pose for this one. She was on my team, and I didn't want to ruin her shot by blinding her with the flash. It payed off, we won!

Who Want's to go to a Baseball Game With Me?

No Really, Here's the schedule for the next two weeks

Tampa Bay at Colorado
6/15 7:05 pm
6/16 6:05 pm
6/17 1:05 pm

NYY at Colorado
6/19 7:05 pm
6/20 7:05 pm
6/21 1:05 pm

I was thinking we should have a Saturday Fun Day this weekend, maybe the 6:05 game would be fun, and I definitely want to go to at least one of those Yankee games. And Jill, don't sweat it, we'll get Rock Pile tickets for five bucks so if we want to we can leave after a few innings.

Also, the Washington Nationals are coming in August if you want to go see a game we might actually win.

NYC- Saturday

The ferry left around sunset, and it was dark when we headed back, and it was really lovely. After we got back, we navigated our way back up to 85th and York (kind of a long trip with the two express subways out of commission), I got decked out and met up with Jill, Heather, and Steve (Heathers roommate) in Tribeca (all the way back down the other way, I took a cab).

NYC- Saturday

If you can believe this Kristen lived in New York and had never been to Battery Park. Now, there are definitely places in Colorado I have never been, but Colorado is like 67.4 times the size of Manhattan (CO: 104,185 square miles, Manhattan: 22.96 square miles), and none of those places is nearly as well known ass Battery Park. So our just barely missing the ferry turned out to be a stroke of good luck, as we had a spare hour to explore the neighborhood. And take lots of self portraits.

Sara and Yogurt Waffles

Hooray for Sara, we were both looking a little rough for happy hour margs on Monday, but we had a great time.

I had a killer hankering for waffles Tuesday night, but i had no milk and used yogurt instead, it worked ok, but I wouldn't suggest it unless your milk is sour and you can't wait for waffles. They weren't light and fluffy like my usual waffles (I make kick-ass waffles) and they were a little too moist, almost soggy, but they still hit the spot.

Ah, work. I share an office with three other people, all of whom are still on vacation, and I am so productive having the office all to myself.

I have a ton of stuff to do from now until pretty much the end of summer, so I'll have my nose to the grind stone.

I think my computer is about to crash for good (it has been mini-crashing for the past three days), so I need to supplement my income a little, and I may pick up some extra work at Hazen on the weekends. Not ideal, but not terrible, and I really can't complain that they let me work whenever I want to. Pretty sweet arrangement if you ask me. So my relief at just being done with the LSAT has passed (said relief lasted about 24 hours), and now I am completely stressing about my score. However, I can't really do anything about it so I guess I'll try to forget about it.

I truly hope that nobody reads the essay (that's what they say in the prep books). It reminded me of when I was in DECA in high school, and I made it to the final round in the national competition and just totally choked and said something completely pedantic and ridiculous.

Oh well, what do they expect, I'm and engineer, not an english major.

A Quick Note

Sorry if you aren't one of the three people that might be interested in all the pictures from my vacation, but tough luck! I have lots of pictures, but I have plenty of non-vacation posting things in my pocket as well. The LSAT was today, and it turned out to be about 5 hours long. Before you ask, I have no idea how I did, but I sure am glad it's over. In a fortuitous turn of events the test got out about six, and although I had planned on going to yoga, the afternoon was so beautiful and I was in such a euphoric mood (from being done with the test) that instead I decided to grab a cocktail and sit in the sun. I called up some ladies, and lo and behold Sara was mere blocks away and she joined my for a couple of margaritas and some great chit chat. So, thanks for the great company Sara!

The Meatheads! Let me preface by saying we were drunkedy-drunk-drunk. And really only flirting. Mostly. I am so embarrassed but in the spirit of full disclosure I have to admit that they were making their pecs dance. Oh the shame.

I especially like dudes tender caress of Kristen's cheek in that close up down there.

NYC- Thursday Night

OK, first things first, I am taking the LSAT this afternoon, so at about 1 pm everybody think positive thoughts for me....

About the trip, after a loooong day of traveling on Thursday I finally made it to NYC about 6:30 and headed over to where Heather works about 7 to meet my girl. Took a quick shower (no need to spend forever getting ready there, the humidity does wonders for my hair, just wash and go), grabbed a slice and headed out to some bar (I can't remember the name, I think all of the bars we went to had numbers for names). The bar was a way too scene-y for my tastes, but the view was amazing.

Jill showed up about eleven, and we ran around town until the wee hours dancing and having cocktails and hanging out.

Highlights Part One

My mom took this picture of me at the train depot at BWI before I headed North to NYC. I was starving when I got in to town, so Kleem and I headed out to get a quick slice.

On Friday Jill, Heather and I had a big old lunch at Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station.

Friday night we got all dolled up and headed out on the town with Heather's friend Kristen. I loved this girl! A good time was had by all, apparently.

On Saturday while Jill and Heather napped, Kristen and I went out and about in New York. We got on the subway to head downtown to check out some sights. Unfortunately the two major subway lines were closed so what should have been a relatively short jaunt on an express train turned into a multiple transfer hour-plus journey to Brooklyn and back. We finally got off the train and had missed the ferry by one minute! We took advantage of our missed connection to walk around battery park until the next ferry left an hour later.

Highlights Part Two

So all that gallivanting was worth it, after out stroll in Battery Park, we hopped on the Staten Island Ferry to catch a sunset tour or the sights, we saw the Statue of Liberty (which was better than this crappy picture would lead you to believe).

The return trip was at night, and the view of the city was remarkable all lit up!

It was soooo good to hang with my girl Heather, we had great weather, and great times!

I took this picture of my legs in the cab, and I just wanted to share it with you guys.

Finally, my souvenir from my trip, these cute kicks I got for a steal!

Highlights Part Three

There was a crazy delay on the train from NYC to BWI. Something like three minutes outside of Baltimore the train lost power and we were stuck for almost three hours with no air and bathrooms. It would have been intolerable if not for the two folks I met on the train, we chatted for hours. A great chick from London who was in town for business, and a super cute dude from DC who was heading home after a weekend wedding. They turned an unpleasant delay into a nice afternoon. I wish I had been heading to DC with them so we could have gotten a drink together.

I have to admit, I expected this deluge of surprises when I arrived at my Grandma's house. She loves her QVC, and she had ordered me these trinkets, a watch, a key chain clock, a set of measuring cups and spoons, a cookbook for icebox cakes, and this embellished cellphone case. Oh, Grandma.

The first thing you do when you get to Grandma's house is eat, and you don't stop until you leave. She puts out a spread for every meal, my favorite this visit were these almond stuffed olives, I'm going to have to get my hands on some locally.

This lovely picture is my mom and her mom and me enjoying a stroll by the river in Fredrick, MD.

One thing we look forward to (and frankly you should too if you are ever in Maryland) are the crabs! Steamed crabs with Old Bay, steamed corn and ice cold beer. Mmmmmmm.

Finally, Chuck Palahniuk has a new novel, Rant, which kept me entertained for our (long) trip back to Denver. Yet another example of my bad luck with all things public-transportation related, our flight was delayed, then delayed some more, then delayed some more after we boarded. But, we finally made it home, and I am so happy to be here. Next week I will put up more pictures so don't freak out (Heather), but until then I am studying for the LSAT on Monday, so wish me luck!

So far the vacay has been good, but I'm spending too much money. Easy to do here, with all the shopping and the food and the drinking. Went to Oyster Bar for lunch today, it was awesome, but other than that I have yet to eat anything really tasty.
